Chip-multithreaded (CMT) processors support many simultaneous hardware threads using a combination of Chip Multiprocessing (CMP) and Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT). This paper motivates the CMT design space considering server workload characteristics and trends in underlying semiconductor technology especially relating to power and memory latency/bandwidth. Sun's CMT designs have evolved over three distinct generations and similar design considerations will govern the evolution of other server processors. Why is managing speculation important in CMT processors ? Why will hardware acclerators become increasingly prevalent ? These questions and others lead to interesting research directions.
