White Paper: Multithreaded Application Acceleration with Chip Multithreading (CMT)

This white paper highlights the technical benefits Sun's chip multithreading (CMT) UltraSPARC T2 processor delivers to multithreaded applications, and provides detailed examples of significant performance gains in three application workloads: telco, cryptography, and string searching.

Presented at: MultiCore Expo 2008, on April 1-3, 2008 at Santa Clara, CA.

Abstract: A CMT system provides the developer with a multitude of threads. These systems have an advantage over traditional systems because the cost of sharing between threads is usually cache latency. However, single threaded performance is often lower than if the entire chip had been devoted to a single thread. This presentation explores a number of ways, such as microparallelization, that multiple threads can be used to improve single threaded performance.
