Requirements for Starting a Project on OpenSPARC.net PDF Print E-mail

Starting a project is a simple process that begins by becoming a OpenSPARC.net member and requesting to start a project, and ends with an email notification once the project is set up. Approval of all new projects is conditional upon meeting requirements for valid projects as outlined in the OpenSPARC.net Guiding Principles, as determined by the Community Manager.

Typically projects begin with only a few people. Some will grow into larger projects with many participants and several sub-projects associated to them, all in accordance with the OpenSPARC.net Guiding Principles. Each project has a project owner who monitors the project and allows users to join the project by granting them roles and permissions.

Starting a New Project

  1. Become a sunsource.net member.
  2. Review the Project Approval Requirements (on this page).
  3. Complete the Project Request form, see below.
  4. The Community Manager will review your request and contact you soon.

Project Approval Requirements

You can increase your project's success and community participation by providing the following information on your project request and home page:

  • Review existing projects
Check the list of current projects to see if your project ideas are covered within the scope of any other project. If it does, consider contacting the Project Owner to become part of that project or to have your project as a subproject within the auspices of the original project.
  • Detailed description of your project
Your project home page should include a detailed explanation of your project, including:
    • The project's mission and goals.
    • How to contact you.
    • How to participate - Are you accepting roles and which one?
    • Skills required to work on your project.
  • Source Code
Projects without source code that meet the above requirements can be approved. Make sure that a Contributor Agreement is completed.
  • License
All projects on OpenSPARC.net must have a license associated with them that describes the terms of use. It is recommended to use an existing open source license, but if you chose to create your own you must make it clearly visible on your project homepage.

Not providing the above information could delay the project approval process or cause your request to be disapproved.
