Niagara is designed for high-throughput applications such as domain name
servers or web services. It offers up to eight processor cores on a single die
and four threads per core, making a total of 32 threads.
"The telecoms servers help us expand [T1] in that market," said Warren
Mootrey, senior director of volume SPARC systems at Sun.
Sun unveiled the new systems at a company event in New York, alongside its
new low-cost SPARCIII powered Sun Ultra 25 Workstation.
Targeting developers, the Ultra 25 comes with software including Solaris 10
and the Sun Studio, Sun Java Studio Creator and Sun Java Studio Enterprise
developer tools. Pricing starts at $2,995.
