AFTER opening up the source code of its Solaris operating system and Solaris Enterprise System, Sun Microsystems Inc said it will publish the full specifications of the design of its UltraSparc T1 processor under an open source licence around March next year.

AFTER opening up the source code of its Solaris operating system and Solaris Enterprise System, Sun Microsystems Inc said it will publish the full specifications of the design of its UltraSparc T1 processor under an open source licence around March next year.

The design expressed in the Verilog language will be made available on its OpenSPARC website at www.opensparc.net

“We want to let others design and build their own UltraSparc T1-compatible processor to drive the adoption of our Solaris operating system and Java enterprise system and create a broader user community, hence new markets for our UltraSparc and Solaris-based systems and solutions,” said Sam K. Tan, Sun Microsystems Pte Ltd product marketing manager (Asia South) recently.

The specifications will include a verification suite and simulation models, UltraSparc Architecture 2005 instruction set architecture specifications and a Solaris operating system port.

At the same time, Sun unveiled its 9.6GHz, 64-bit, eight-core, 32-thread UltraSparc T1 processor and announced its Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 rack-mounted servers, both powered by the UltraSparc T1 processor and both featuring CoolThreads technology.

Sun claimed CoolThreads enables these servers to run three times faster than IBM Xeon servers while consuming nearly half the power and cooling costs.

Both devices run under the Sun Solaris 10 operating system and come with its Java Enterprise System software. Both come with four gigabit Ethernet ports and a serial RS232 port.

The T1000 comes with one PCI Express (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) slot and 7,200 RPM, 80GB Serial-ATA hard disk, while the T2000 comes with three PCI-Express slots, two PCI-X slots for 640bits, 133MHz low-profile cards.

The T1000 costs S$5,705 (RM12,836), while the T2000 costs S$14,828 (RM33,363).

Sun is offering its independent software vendor (ISV) partners a 90-days free trial of these servers with the option to buy.
