OpenSPARC T2 FAQ
What is your open source strategy for the UltraSPARC T2?On August 7th, 2007, concurrent with the UltraSPARC T2 launch, we released the OpenSPARC T2 Programmer Reference Manual (PRM) and Microarchitecture Specification, and also announced the NDA Developers Beta Program. We feel this will jump start the development activity around the OpenSPARC T2. Will the UltraSPARC T2 support Linux as well as Solaris?Solaris will, of course, be supported. In addition, other Linux distros are in the works. For example, Canonical is working on a Linux update for the UltraSPARC T2, right now. We can't make any projections on when that update will be completed, but the work is underway, and should be done in the not too distant future. What license and version will you use for the OpenSPARC T2?GPL v2.0 ? the same version we used with OpenSPARC T1. We are also watching the development of GPL v3, and will continue to monitor that license. When do you think you'll finish open sourcing the OpenSPARC T2?We have a phased delivery approach to the open source code. The OpenSPARC T2 RTL release will be completed within about nine months of this UltrSPARC T2 processor announcement, so sometime in the summer of 2008 we should see the T2 RTL. Update: we expect the initial code release to be much sooner than summer of 2008 but we'll have several releases each with incremental functionality. What are you trying to accomplish with the OpenSPARC program? The OpenSPARC program is all about expanding the overall SPARC market and ecosystem, and specifically the market and ecosystem for SPARC CMT technology.
