SUN AND MINISTRY OF EDUCATION FOR THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
ANNOUNCE LANDMARK AGREEMENT BASED ON SUN'S OPENSPARC TECHNOLOGY
MOE Selected OpenSPARC For Its World Record Performance And Because
It's The Industry's Only Open Source, Multicore, Multithreaded
Processor Architecture
Beijing and Santa Clara, Calif., February 27, 2008 Sun
Microsystems, Inc., (Nasdaq: JAVA) and the Ministry of Education (MOE)
for the People's Republic of China today announced a three-year
collaboration agreement designed to meet China's demand for cultivating
integrated circuit (IC) engineering talent and industry development.
The agreement is based on Sun's OpenSPARC(TM) program. MOE selected
OpenSPARC because it is the fastest microprocessor in the world, and
Sun is the only major processor vendor to freely offer its designs to
the open source community. Both the OpenSPARC T1 and OpenSPARC T2
processor RTL (register transfer level) files can be downloaded at www.opensparc.net.

OpenSPARC Centers of Excellence:
Sun continues to open additional OpenSPARC Technology Centers of
Excellence (CoE). Each OpenSPARC Technology Center of Excellence has a
minimum two-year commitment, during which time they will execute chip
design research and course work based on Sun's chip multithreading
(CMT) design.
Sun has OpenSPARC Technology CoEs at the following Universities:
University of California, Santa Cruz
University of Texas, Austin
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
University of Illinois, Urbana-Campaign
Stanford University
Carnegie Mellon University
OpenSPARC Downloads
OpenSPARC T1 is approaching 7,000 RTL downloads since March, 2006.
The recently released OpenSPARC T2 has already been downloaded over 500
times.
Release of GCCFSS 4.2
GCCFSS is a C/C++ compiler that dramatically improves the
performance of applications that are normally compiled with gcc on
SPARC systems.
With release 4.2, many bug fixes are included plus:
1. OpenMP for C and C++
2. increased performance, including a new world record for
single-chip integer performance using the SPECint_rate2006 benchmark

OpenSPARC Contest:
These Additional Countries have been added to the OpenSPARC
Community Innovation Awards Contest:
Austria, Cambodia, Croatia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Romania,
Singapore, and Venezuela.
These countries have been added to the exisiting countries of
Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China,
Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India,
Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico,
Norway, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden,
Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the Netherlands, the United
Kingdom, and the fifty United States and the District of Columbia. Void
in Puerto Rico, Province of Quebec, Canada and where prohibited by law.
More eligible countries could be added to the contest the future.
