Since the launch of Sun’s Startup Essentials program, hundreds of customers have joined up to save big on Sun hardware. In the program, eligible startups get discounts of up to 50% on Sun Fire x64 servers, CoolThreads servers, desktop systems, and more.

"Up to 50%?" That’s right. In fact, the savings are even more, in some cases, according to Sun customer Adam Kalsey, who was accepted into the Startup Essentials program last November.

On his blog, Kalsey reports the savings for three dozen Sun products: "Most products are in the 30%-50% off range. One server, a $70k behemoth, is a whopping 66% off." Check out Kalsey’s entire list.

Sun designs everything about Startup Essentials with new and emerging companies in mind. By talking to startups, veteran Sun engineer Will Snow found a recurring theme: these companies employ storage, processing, and presentation tiers, frequently using the exact same Web 2.0 tools.

Snow wants to learn even more about the hardware needs of startups. If you have some thoughts, check out his blog and drop him a line.
