What I think is "Cool" about the new CoolThread Servers
- 5x the performance at 1/5 the fuel costs
- Greater Performance with space and power efficiency
- Each CPU has multiple cores, and multiple threads
- "Sun Microsystems was able to get as many as eight cores
each capable of processing four concurrent instruction threads for a
total of 32 simultaneous threads onto the chip, which was formerly
code-named Niagara. This is important because competitors such as Intel
Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. are not expected to release
eight-core processors until 2008. Both chip manufacturers recently announced plans to move to quad-core processors in 2007." -eweek.com
- Sun has started a Try and Buy Program with the Sun Fire[TM] T2000 and Sun Fire[TM] T1000
- I think this Eweek.com quote sums up the industry impact the CoolThread Productline has started
- "Sun's Sun Fire T2000 server makes a revolutionary
technology leap with the UltraSPARC T1 processor--something that really
makes the server, and Sun, stand out from the competition." -eweek.com
- Sun's Eco-Responsibility Initiative, and Why
- "Good for Business, Good for the Environment"
-
The growing power consumption by data centers and the need to cool
constantly running equipment and servers results in increasingly high
energy costs. Using less power helps cut the cooling bill. Using
smaller, more efficient servers reduces the need for expensive rack
space. Now, what's good for the environment is imperative for business.
Sun designs and delivers "eco-friendly" servers and microchips that
help reduce power consumption and related costs. ----Sun.com

In the Server category, The Sun Fire T2000 wins the Gold | |
"Sun Microsystems, Inc., Sun Fire T2000. Sun's Niagara servers
caught the rising wave of power and cooling concerns perfectly. To be
sure, Sun helped bring those concerns to the fore in the first place,
but they're no less real for that."
